2023 is the first Syrah produced by Modales and WOW is it a stunner! It has the perfect juiciness to spiciness ratio. The palate is plush and smooth. It is ready to drink now but will also cellar well.
Terroir Notes: Syrah is a rare variety in Michigan, with only a handful of acres currently planted (as of 2025). While there was a surge of Syrah plantings in the late 1990s, harsh winters led many growers to abandon the variety. Fortunately for us, Modales sourced exceptional Syrah from two vineyards in Berrien County--Dablon and Lemon Creek. The warmer climate further south allows red grapes to thrive.
Winemaking Notes: The Syrah was harvested on separate days but co-fermented in the same vessel. The grapes were gently destemmed but left whole, creating a semi-carbonic environment that enhances bright fruit flavors. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeast. Extraction was achieved through 2 open pump overs per day, maintaining moderate fermentation temperatures to balance structure and fruit expression. The wine aged in a mix of neutral and new French oak barrels (15% light toast) without sulfites, allowing for natural evolution. After 15 months in barrel, the was was racked into stainless steel for natural clarification before being bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with a low addition of sulfites.
Suggested Pairings: Lamb gyros, aged Gouda, cheddar, venison, grilled eggplant
