Vineyard Notes: Dave has managed the farming and consulted on many vineyards in California that are biodynamic certified. Now, he is working hard at changing farming in northern Michigan by helping local vineyards move towards organic and biodynamic farming practices. The Blaufränkisch grapes come from Vineyard 15, which sits on the north end of Old Mission Peninsula next to the General Store. The vineyard is on sandy loam soil facing the bay. Vineyard 15 is named after its owner Vinnie Johnson, known as “The Microwave” while playing professional basketball on the Detroit Pistons. His number was 15.
Winemaking Notes: Dave chose to leave one-third whole cluster during production to enhance the tannins and mouthfeel. The balance of the fruit was destemmed but not crushed; instead, the berries were allowed to break down naturally during punch downs. The wine was pressed and aged for 15 months in used barrels.
Tasting Notes: This is a serious Blaufränkisch showing fresh red fruit, good structure, and spice notes of coriander and pepper.
