David and Jackie met in Napa, California, where David worked as the biodynamic vineyard manager at Grgich Hills, and Jackie worked as senior project manager at a landscape architecture firm. They married in 2008, knowing from the start that they wanted to build a business together. Combining David’s extensive experience in biodynamic farming with Jackie’s project management and design expertise, they launched a vineyard consulting business. Through this venture, they gained access to some of California’s finest fruit and founded BOS Wine in 2010 with just 48 cases of BOS Phoenix Ranch Syrah.
As they considered where to raise their family and expand their business, David and Jackie began searching for property outside Napa Valley. They envisioned being part of a younger wine-growing region where they could influence quality winemaking and sustainable farming practices. Frequent visits to northern Michigan during family trips—David’s birth state—and strong connections with local winemakers led them to settle in Elk Rapids near Traverse City in 2018.
Since returning to Michigan, David has become a biodynamic and organic vineyard consultant for several growers, including Mari Vineyards and Modales. The BOS team firmly believes that great wine begins in the vineyard. A biodynamic vineyard is managed as a holistic entity, using natural materials and composts while eliminating chemicals. David’s experience includes managing and consulting on certified biodynamic vineyards in California, and he is now dedicated to advancing sustainable farming in northern Michigan by helping local vineyards transition to organic and biodynamic practices.
“Biodynamic farming is more than a method; it’s a philosophy that treats the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem. By harmonizing with lunar and cosmic cycles and prioritizing soil health and biodiversity, biodynamic vineyards are not just grape producers but environmental stewards. These practices result in wines authentically reflecting the region’s unique terroir, a true pleasure for wine enthusiasts.” - Bos Wine
