Terroir Notes: Ten Hands Vineyard faces the cool East Bay, situated on the northeastern shore of Old Mission Peninsula. The soil is sandy loam with mixed concentrations of clay and gravel. The glacier movements mixed the soil, so it both drains well, has very little concentrated sand, contains moderate humus, and is slightly alkaline in pH. For fruits, including grapes, this is ideal. Tom and Claudine Petzold enhance the soil with annual compost additions by planting a vast mix of grasses and legumes in the row middles. Dave Bos is passionate about biodyanmic viticulture. Before moving to Michigan, he managed the farming and consulted on many biodynamic certified vineyards in California including Grgich Hills. Now he is introducing organic, biodynamic and regenerative practices to growers like the Petzold family.
Vintage Notes: 2021 vintage was one of the warmest years with many warm autumn nights allowing some of the acidity to drop out. Warm vintages can produce many styles of Riesling. Dave let the Riesling for All That Is Gold hang 5 days longer to enhance the ripeness of the vintage and get a lushness that is not always obtained.
Tasting Notes: All That is Gold Riesling saw extended lees contact, which gave it additional texture on the palate. Enjoy notes of honeysuckle, peach skin, and Cara Cara orange. This Riesling will age well.
