Perched above West Grand Traverse Bay on the Leelanau Peninsula, Two K Farms was founded in 2010 by brothers George and Max Koskela. The name “Two K” is a direct nod to the Koskela brothers themselves — K & K — and their shared vision of building a fully estate-driven cidery and winery rooted in Northern Michigan agriculture. Today, the farm remains family owned and managed, with the Koskela brothers deeply involved in every aspect of the operation.
The 80-acre estate is guided by a simple but demanding philosophy: graft to glass. All phases of production take place on the farm, from the propagation of apple trees and vines to fermentation, aging, and final packaging. This closed-loop model ensures exceptional quality, full traceability, and a deep connection between orchard and bottle.
Two K Farms is home to one of the largest plantings of heritage, high-density apple trees in the Midwest, with more than 30 cider-specific and heirloom varieties cultivated across the estate. These heritage apple trees are grown specifically for cider, selected for their balance of acidity, tannin, sugar, and aromatic complexity rather than fresh-eating appeal. This diverse orchard allows Two K to produce a range of varietal ciders alongside both traditional and modern blends that highlight the expressive potential of Northern Michigan fruit. Among the plantings is Esopus Spitzenburg, famously favored by Thomas Jefferson, as well as the fruit behind their acclaimed cherry cider, which is a tribute to nearby Traverse City, long celebrated as the Cherry Capital of the World.
The farm’s location above Lake Michigan is central to the character of the ciders. The lake’s moderating influence, combined with well-drained soils and a long, cool growing season, yields fruit with naturally high acidity, freshness, and aromatic lift. These conditions lend themselves to ciders that are precise, structured, and driven by orchard character rather than sweetness.
In addition to cider, Two K Farms produces small-scale estate wines, crafted exclusively from fruit grown on the property. Across both categories, the Koskela brothers maintain a consistent philosophy: estate farming, varietal integrity, and minimal manipulation in the cellar. The results have earned national recognition, including being named Best Cidery in the United States in 2022, and have established Two K Farms as a benchmark for American estate cider.
