When Andy visited Austria with the Zev Rovine Selections team during the Karakterre wine fair tour in 2022, he was immediately taken with Judith Beck’s commitment to organic farming, the energy of her vineyards, and the playful spirit that shows up in her wines. What really stood out was the contrast: while the wines feel bright, expressive, and full of life, they’re made with precision and serious focus in the cellar. That tension between liveliness and control defines her work and places her firmly in the vanguard of a new generation of Burgenland winemakers.

Judith’s estate is based in Gols in northeastern Burgenland and was founded by her parents in the 1970s. After studying at the Klosterneuburg Viticulture College and working in France, Italy, and Chile, she made her first vintage in 2001 and took full control of the winery in 2004. In 2007, she began converting the vineyards to biodynamics, guided by the ideas of Rudolf Steiner and a belief in ecological responsibility. She joined respekt-BIODYN and released her first certified biodynamic vintage in 2010. Nearly all of her wines are also certified organic, with a few parcels still completing the transition.

Judith farms 13.5 hectares planted to a wide range of varieties, including Blauer Portugieser, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. All grapes are harvested by hand, and the wines are made with intention: unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with little or no added sulfites depending on the cuvée. Judith Beck’s wines are thoughtful, vibrant, and quietly bold. They reflect a region in motion and a winemaker who understands both where she comes from and where she wants to go.
