Martin and Marlies’ traditionalism is on full display with their Schiava (also known as Vernatsch in German), which is the Alto Adige’s ancient signature red grape. So, they’ve named the cuvee Upupa Rot after the rare, indigenous Hoopoe bird whose image graces their labels. The wine is almost always blended with a small percentage of Pinot Noir, just as Martin’s grandfather’s generation would have done.
Upupa Rot has a beautiful fruit bouquet of strawberries, raspberries, cherries, cranberries as well as scents of blooming roses and vanilla. Juicy and easy to drink on the palate, it impresses with its fresh, elegant character, pleasantly dry tannins, and a slightly mineral flavor with structure and intensity.
