Production Notes: Sihhenge Pineapple Rum is made from fresh case juice, pot distilled rum. The sugarcane and the Natal Queen pineapples are manually harvested from fields on the surrounding farm. After milling, cane juice ferments with wild yeast and is distilled in a custom pot still designed by MHOBA founder Robert Greaves. It is then infused with the just harvested Natal Queen pineapple for two weeks before bottling. The Natal Queen pineapple is a low acid, local pineapple variety, which has a good balance between tart and sweet. “Sihhenge” means “pineapple” in SiSwati.

Tasting Notes: Stir fried pineapple and soy on the nose, tepache, umami and brioche on the tongue, and a juicy, nutty finish. Enjoy neat, on the rocks, or in your favorite cocktail.

MHOBA Rum Distillery: Mhoba Rum Distillery is an artisanal cane-to-cask producer located among the sugarcane fields of Mpumalanga, South Africa. The distillery produces single estate rum from fresh-cut organic cane juice, fermented and distilled on site using pot stills. Founded in 2013 by Robert Greaves, Mhoba reflects a hands-on approach to craftsmanship and innovation, with Greaves personally designing and building the distillery’s equipment, from the cane mills to the stills. The name “Mhoba” means “sugarcane” in SiSwati, the language of the Swazi people of the region. Google Map Link

The Greaves family has farmed sugarcane at the foot of the Makhonjwa Mountains since the 1980s. The nearby town of Malalane is defined by its tropical climate, intense heat, and deep ties to the sugar industry, including one of South Africa’s largest sugar mills, which plays a central role in the local economy.
