Vineyard Notes: The estate is located in the province of Teramo in the fertile Vibrata Valley, which is close to the border of the Marche region. The sea is only 9.3 miles away and provides moderating breezes for perfect ripening. The vines are 20-40 years old. The vineyards are certified organic with conversion to biodynamic. The Montepulciano grapes for the Poggio Varano Cerasuolo come from the highest vineyard, Il Colle (the hill), where the higher altitude preserves the acidity and the cooler nights enhance the aromatics.
Winemaking Notes: Grapes were manually harvested. There was no skin contact for the Cerasuolo. Spontaneous fermentation took place in 16-hectoliter amphorae. After fermentation, the wine was racked and aged for 6 months in amphorae. This wine is classified as a Cerasuolo Superiore , which means it has lower yields, a degree higher in alcohol, and cannot be released until March of the year following the harvest.
Tasting Notes: The wine is soulful, textural, and has loads of flavor. On the nose, it has a fresh, floral and fruity bouquet full of cherries, strawberries, and roses with a touch of spice. On the palate, it shows lush currant fruit with perfect fruit acid balance. The finish is long and lingering. Pairings include any seafood, salads, and fresh cheeses.
