Notes from Silvia Altare: "2018 was a challenging “contadino’ s vintage” (farmer's vintage) out in the fields. Wines are especially fragrant and aromatic, definitely more on the lighter side, a good contrast with the richness of 2017. You will recall all the Serralunga’s style characteristics, but you will also be impressed with the transparency and the freshness.

Barolo Subregion: Serralunga d'Alba
Vine Age: 21 years old
Harvest: Manual

Vinification Notes: The Nebbiolo macerates on the skins for approximately 4-5 days in rotary fermenters with temperature control. The wine ages for 24 months in a mix of new and neutral French barriques. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast as does the malolactic fermentation. The wine is not fined, filtered, or clarified. No substances that could modify the color or the structure of the wine is ever used.

The Elio Altare 2018 Barolo Riserva Cerretta (with fruit from the Vigna Bricco) has lots of dark blackberry that is complemented by spicy oak, all to large effect. That oak continues to the palate and the tannins (mostly oak tannins) with toasted spice, nutmeg and vanilla bean. The fruit condition is good, and subtle signs of evolution have begun. Only 4,200 bottles were made.
