Harvest Notes from Silvia Altare: "2020 offers an incredible range of Barolo, with a finesse and a delicacy that we haven't seen in a few years. I want to think of vintages from the past like 1998, as soon as it was released it seemed simple and small but over the year it grew and now it is considered one of the most sought-after vintages, still sharp and on point."

Vineyard Notes: Arborina is the Altare family vineyard that is located right outside their winery and home in La Morra. One Nebbiolo parcel was planted in 1948 by grandpa Giovanni, while another was planted in 1989. Farming is organic. Silvia only uses copper and copper sulfate if strictly necessary. Organic cow manure from their mountain cows is used to fertilize the vines.

Vinification Notes: The Nebbiolo macerates on the skins for approximately 4-5 days in rotary fermenters with temperature control. The wine ages for 24 months in a mix of new and neutral French barriques. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast as does the malolactic fermentation. The wine is not fined, filtered, or clarified. No substances that could modify the color or the structure of the wine is ever used.

Reviews

  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 94 (4/4/2024)

The Elio Altare 2020 Barolo Arborina makes a bright first impression with lots of cherry fruit, cranberry and tart berry nuances. It offers underripe flavors that are much appreciated in a hot vintage such as this. A touch of mineral adds sharpness in the form of wet stone or petrichor. The Arborina showcases classic Nebbiolo flavors, with good volume, velvety tannins and apparent freshness.

    Rating: 95 (1/4/2024)

The 2020 Barolo Arborina is a bright, focused wine that shows all the energy that is typical of this La Morra site, especially in its driving tannic profile. Dark cherry, spice, leather, menthol and dried flowers all come alive in the glass. Floral and savory notes add aromatic presence and breadth on the finish. I would give this a few years to soften.
