Harvest Notes from Silvia Altare: "As a big fan of entry level wines, I put the same labor-intensive effort as we do for Barolo into the vineyards and the vinification. I want them to be expressive, juicy and ready to drink. A warm vintage doesn't always translate into a jammy, concentrated wine. We prioritize balance and freshness, so picking dates are always crucial during vintages like this past one. This year the weather allowed us to follow the natural ripening pattern without rushing to pick at different times. We sort in the vineyards for harvest to ensure the best fruit gets to tank.
As my father taught me, I insist on the no filtration no clarification method which gives us wines with this deep umami sensation that I love. Our wines are stable and protected, and with just enough SO2 to ensure you get the same wine wherever you are in the world. Issues with Flavescenza dorata / flavescence dorée remain and the Barbera production is dropping drastically. On top of that, 2023 being so dry and hot cut the production for all the wines."
Location: La Morra
Vine Age: 20 to 40 years old
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are harvested by hand. They macerate with their skins at a controlled temperature in rotary fermenters for 2-3 days. The wine ages for 10 months in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast as does the malolactic fermentation. The wine is not fined, filtered, or clarified. No substances that could modify the color or the structure of the wine is ever used.
Farming Notes: All the vineyards are farmed organically. Copper and copper sulfate are only used if necessary. Organic cow manure from Altare's mountain cows is used to fertilize the vines.
