Terracotta Amphora: Cirelli owns 800-liter amphorae produced by a Tuscan artisan in the small village of Impruneta, which is the home of terracotta craftsmanship in Italy. Each amphora is equipped with a fitted stainless steel lid to help limit extra oxygen contact.

Winemaking Notes: Montepulciano grapes are manually harvested. The bunches are destemmed and softly pressed after a few hours of skin maceration. The must is transferred to the clay amphorae for spontaneous primary fermentation. The wine is racked and then put back in the amphorae for malolactic fermentation. After which, it was racked one more time and put back into the amphorae to rest only on the fine lees. Aging in terracotta amphorae lasts about 6 months.

Tasting Notes: Light, rusty red color. Nose exhibits red berries and strawberry jam with a hint of cherry. This rosato wine is of medium body with some tannins that can stand up to pork and poultry. Flavors of red fruit lingers long after on the palate.

Vinified and aged entirely in amphora, the 2022 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is loaded with delicate character. For all intents and purposes, it's a red wine, pouring a deep, translucent garnet hue in the glass. Complex, finessed and polished, it sizzles with spiced black cherry, lavender, cinnamon, crushed rose petals and riverstone minerality. A gauze-like web of fine tannins sets across the palate, holding the wine together. There's such clarity and delineation here and a long, gentle, floral finish to boot. Color me impressed.
