Terroir Notes: Somló is Hungary’s tiniest wine region (only 300 hectares). Somló is an extinct volcano crowned by castle ruins that date back to the 11th century. The slopes are comprised of black basalt bedrock (the remnant of ancient lava flows), loess, clay, and sand topsoil. The unique terroir makes some of the smokiest, most fiery white wines in the world. Meinklang purchased their Somló vineyard in the early 2000s.
About the Juhfark (pronounced yooh-fark) Grape: Grown only on the volcanic soils of Somló, Juhfark or “sheep’s tail” in Hungarian, makes white wines that are ashy, savory and fierce with mineral-driven intensity. In Somló, the minerality paired with high acidity results some outstanding wines with great aging potential. Other flavors include green apples, flowers, lemon and wheat.
