Bodega Pablo Fallabrino is located 4 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean in Atlántida, Uruguay. Atlántida is a subregion of Canelones--the biggest and most important wine region in the country. Pablo Fallabrino, a laid back surfer, is the owner and winemaker of Bodega Pablo Fallabrino and he lives on the estate. His grandfather Angelo Fallabrino immigrated to Uruguay in 1920 from Piedmont and planted 5 vineyards and started 2 wineries in the 1930’s. Pablo studied with both his father and grandfather and eventually started his current estate in 1997 where 12 of the 30 hectares are under vine. Producing mostly Piedmont grape varieties in addition to Tannat, the wines typically show an Old World, nuanced style which we tend to gravitate towards. Pablo's approach is not to overthink the winemaking; he goes with his instincts, takes chances, and makes extraordinary wines with his own personal signature.

Reviews

  • Pablo Fallabrino 2022 'Estival' Blanco, Atlántida
    Descorchados
    Rating: 93 (5/17/2023)

A lovely wine in its fruity and floral aromas, with a hint of sweetness toward the finish that contrasts with the firm and juicy acidity that accompanies the wine all the way through the palate. It's dense and full of flavors of ripe white fruit and creamy texture. Estival's first vintage was the 2004, and it has followed a similar formula ever since. The Chardonnay was harvested very early, as if the fruit were destined for a sparkling wine, to give the wine its nerve, while the Gewürztraminer and Moscato were harvested very late to provide a creaminess and the fruitier side.

  • Pablo Fallabrino 2020 Arneis / Chardonnay, Atlántida
    Descorchados
    Rating: 92 (2/23/2021)

This is a co-fermentation of 60% Arneis (Fallabrino's family is from Piemonte, the home of this variety) and 40% Chardonnay, all from their own vineyards in Atlántida. With six months on the lees, this year the wine feels unctuous, with flavors of ripe white fruits and dried fruits. The body is dense, with floral tones, and a rich acidity that manages to balance. For fried fish.

  • Pablo Fallabrino 2018 Tannat, Atlantida
    Descorchados
    Rating: 94 (2/23/2021)

This is the "classic" Tannat of Fallabrino, a red that comes from vineyards planted around the mid-90s in the clay and lime soils of Atlantis, about four kilometers from the waters of the Río de la Plata where it meets the the salty waters of the Atlantic. With 30% of the blend aged in very old barrels, it is a photograph of the variety in Canelones, with its austerity, its earthy tones (like Nebbiolo) and the firm, intense, rough tannins, surrounded by ripe red fruits, spices and flowers. Although you can drink it now with salami, it is better to wait three to four years for it to gain complexity.

  • Pablo Fallabrino 2018 Tannat, Atlantida
    Decanter
    Rating: 94 (9/15/2023)

A robust Tannat from vineyard planted in the mid-1990s, 4km from the Rio de la Plata, in the area of Atlántida. With 30% of the blend aged in barrels, it is generous in ripe black fruit, rich in earthy tones and spices, and has firm tannins.
