Terroir Notes: Almost half of Uruguay's population lives in Montevideo, so it is no surprise that roughly 80% of Uruguay's vineyards are planted near the capital city. Immigrant families brought a wide variety of grapes and planted them on the rich clay soils. The climate is mild with warm summers and cool winters, but nothing too extreme. The Atlantic Ocean influence is an important factor in Canelones as the coastal winds provide ventilation and reduce humidity/risk of rot. Strictly part of Canelones, Atlántida is sandwiched between Montevideo and Maldonado on the coast. This is a small subregion that has coastal breezes and cooler temperatures than Canelones. You will find a mixture of varieties, both red and white. Tannat is Uruguay's most planted variety, accounting for more than 1 in 4 vines.
Winemaking Notes: This fortified dessert wine is made in a combination of both Chinato and Marsala wines. The base wine is Tannat that is soaked in a special recipe of herbs and dried fruit and is fortified with brandy. It spends 12 months in used French oak.
Tasting Notes: The wine is dripping with notes of creamy caramel like a Werther's Original. This is a chocolate cake with a melted caramel middle and vanilla frosting in a bottle.
