Bea produces perhaps his most hallowed wine from pure Sagrantino grown on the hilltop site of Pagliaro, situated at nearly 400 meters above sea level in Montefalco proper. Bea’s wines offer a panoply of spices so complex and evocative as to nearly defy belief, plus an irresistible sense of exuberant wildness that speaks both to Sagrantino’s ferocity and to the trusting low-interventionism of Bea’s methodology.
The harvest normally occurs during the second half of October and is always done by hand. After crushing and destemming, the wine ferments spontaneously in stainless steel tanks. The cuvaison extends for 40 to 50 days. The wine ages for one year in stainless steel and another two years in large Slavonian oak barrels. It spends one more year in bottle before release. Like all Bea wines, this is unfined and unfiltered.
