Wine Notes: Aszú 6 Puttonyos is the Kiralyudvar's classic Aszú wine and is an exemplar of the style. It shows tremendous richness, with balance maintained by knife-edged acidity. Fully enjoyable today with pastries and creamy cheeses, aszú will age nobly over decades with proper cellaring.
Aszú is produced from fully botrytized grapes that are picked berry by berry off the vine by hand. The berries are then pressed and added to a fermenting must of the finest base wine. The grapes are sourced throughout the estate's holding and include approximately 70% Furmint and 30% Hárslevelű (pronounced "harsh-level-lou"). Fermentation and aging occurs in 500-liter neutral Hungarian oak barrels for about 24 months.
Terroir Notes: The glorious sweet wines of the Tokaj region are unique and recognized as among the best, if not THE best, in the world. In Tokaj, the rivers Bodrog and Tisza converge, which creates densely foggy mornings; the humidity is perfect for noble rot to thrive. Then, sunny and breezy afternoons shrivel the berries so much that they can't simply be pressed for juice. Traditionally, crushed aszú (pronounced “AH-soo” and the Hungarian word for shriveled botrytis grapes) measured in a wooden bucket called puttony are added to young wine to soak and ferment. The sweetness of the wine is then measured by how many puttonyos are added to the base wine.
