Harvest Notes: The Gamay is manually harvested at full maturity. The grapes are carefully sorted in the field and then transported to the winery every hour in large, shallow bins to prevent crushing during transit.

Winemaking Notes: Full bunches were placed in cement tanks by gravity and filled with CO2 inert gas for anaerobic (carbonic) fermentation lasting 10-20 days. A gentle foot crushing was applied with care to start the fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Grapes were drained manually and pressed slowly for 24 hours in a vertical press. The 2022 Fleurie aged for 9 months on fine lees in 70% 228-liter old oak barrels and 30% large foudre. The Gamay was bottled unfiltered and unfiltered at the estate in spring. The only addition of sulfites occurred at bottling.

Tasting Notes: Raised like a great Burgundy, this seductive Fleurie impresses with its purity. The palate is a fresh and carries along minerality distinctive of place.

About Fleurie: Although Fleurie lacks the power of renowned crus like Moulin-à-Vent and Morgon, its charming floral elegance leaves a lasting impression. It is among the most recognizable crus after these two, thanks to the presence of quality Fleurie producers exporting to the U.S. Known for its lighter style within cru Beaujolais, Fleurie boasts blossom-like red fruit and the distinctive aromas of roses and violets. Often regarded as the prettiest of the crus, Fleurie is delightful when served chilled.

    Rating: 92 (4/23/2024)

The 2022 Fleurie comes from two parcels at the top and bottom of the slopes. It has a more backward nose that demands coaxing from the glass, with just a touch of reduction (Sunier suggested this could be because he used a new foudre this vintage). The palate is medium-bodied with a pixelated entry, pretty Morello cherry and raspberry notes and a little earthiness toward the finish that gently fans out. This may require a little more time, perhaps another 18 months for it to gel together.
