Harvest Notes: The Gamay is manually harvested at full maturity. The grapes are carefully sorted in the field and then transported to the winery every hour in large, shallow bins to prevent crushing during transit.

Winemaking Notes: Full bunches were placed in cement tanks by gravity and filled with CO2 inert gas for anaerobic (carbonic) fermentation lasting 10 days and then semi-carbonic for another 10 days. A gentle foot crushing was applied with care to start the fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Grapes were drained manually and pressed slowly for 24 hours in a vertical press. The 2022 Morgon aged for 9-11 months on fine lees in 100% 228-liter old oak barrels. The Gamay was bottled unfiltered and unfiltered. The only addition of sulfites occurred at bottling.

Tasting Notes: The Julien Sunier Morgon is generous, fleshy and round, offering notes of black cherry and spice. The ample palate showcases beautiful, silky tannins.

About Morgon: Morgon ranks just behind Moulin-à-Vent in terms of body and structure, offering a fuller, more serious style of Beaujolais. Although granite soil—Gamay’s preferred terrain—can be found across all of Beaujolais, Morgon is particularly granite-rich, resulting in concentrated and relatively tannic wines. These wines only improve with age, developing depth and complexity over time.

    Rating: 92 (4/23/2024)

The 2022 Morgon comes from 2.5 hectares of vines from different parcels (these are named on the label). Sunier told me he doesn't want to make a "masculine" Morgon, so he is not seeking tannins. He uses wild yeasts with no pump-overs. The 2022 has an expressive bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberries and hints of pressed white flowers. The palate is fleshy and open, slightly chalky in texture and, like the Régnié, there is attractive piquancy on the finish by way of a dash of white pepper.
