Winemaking Notes: The Sangiovese vinifies in concrete tanks. The wine matures for 36 months in neutral Allier oak barrels of 16, 33, and 54 hectoliters in size. The Brunello always ages for a minimum of 6 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes: The wine shows a ruby and bright red color, the nose has an intense bouquet of cherry and pulpy, ripe plum embellished with spicy touches, earthy and mineral nuances and intriguing notes of undergrowth. On the palate the noble tannic texture of Sangiovese stretches tight and impressive but also velvety, balanced by acidity and juicy freshness that confers elegance and long persistence. Pair with game, lamb, grilled red meats and mature cheeses.

Terroir Notes: It rains very little during the summer in central Italy. Montalcino might get two consecutive months without any rain. Therefore, the vines have to dig deep into the soil for water. Continuous sea breezes known as the Maestrale and the Libeccio keep the vines dry and the insects and plant diseases under control. In addition, Mastrojanni is located near Mount Amiata, a volcano which became extinct 700,000 years ago and which is 1,738 meters high. This mountain determines the Mastrojanni microclimate because at night cold winds come down from the mountain causing a large diurnal temperature change that refreshes the vines from the summer heat. When a storm is close by, curiously, this mountain often diverts it thanks to its rising currents. Mastrojanni is therefore better protected from hailstorms, for example, than other areas of Montalcino.

As this develops on the palate, the purity of the fruit emerges, hallmarked by flavors of plum, rip cherry, wild herbs and iron with tobacco and bergamot accents. Solidly built, with dusty tannins vying for attention with the fruit on the lingering finish. Best from 2027 through 2042. 2,000 cases imported.

Deep red berry fruits, sweet spice, cinnamon and cloves introduce the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino. This is silky to the core, with depths of red fruit and spice, all guided by juicy acidity. Licorice and clove combine with tart raspberry as the 2019 finishes surprisingly fresh and only lightly structured.
