In the foothills of Mount Olympus, Christos Zafeirakis is carrying on a four-generation family winemaking tradition in Tirnavos while bringing a distinctly modern perspective to the region. After studying oenology at the University of Milan and working in Tuscany, Piedmont, and Alto Adige, Christos returned home and established the area’s first organic vineyard in 2005. He also helped bring the nearly forgotten native grape Limniona back into production.
For Zafeirakis, everything starts with the vineyard. The 8 hectares are farmed organically, with Tirnavos’ clay-rich soils providing the foundation. Individual sites add layers of sand, flint, calcium, and trace elements, giving the wines a strong sense of place. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation is used across the range, with stainless steel and 1,200-liter Austrian fermenters depending on the wine.
The focus is simple: healthy vineyards, native varieties, and a close connection to the land. Through careful farming and ongoing massale selection, Christos continues to refine both his vineyards and his wines, making some of the most compelling expressions of modern Thessaly.
