Alexis Lichine (1913-1989) was a highly influential wine expert, author, and entrepreneur who left a profound mark on the wine industry in the 20th century. Often called the "Pope of Wine," Lichine's contributions spanned continents, reshaping the marketing and education of wine on a global scale. Fluent in Russian, English, and French, his linguistic abilities and deep expertise made him a key figure in promoting French wines worldwide.

Lichine's 1951 book, The Wines of France, along with his subsequent publications, became essential guides that simplified the intricate world of wine. His books were translated into multiple languages, including Japanese, and provided detailed information on wine regions while offering rich insights into the cultures surrounding them.

He revitalized two prestigious Bordeaux estates, Château Prieuré-Lichine and Château Lascombes, and founded the importing firm Alexis Lichine & Co., further cementing his legacy in the wine world. In 1987, Decanter wine magazine honored him as "Man of the Year," a recognition that highlighted his enduring influence. This legacy continues through his son, Sacha Lichine, who has made his mark on wine with the creation of the acclaimed rosé: Château d'Esclans Whispering Angel.
