The Manzur family founded Bodega el Bayeh in 2020 with consulting winemaker Matías Michelini. Located in the Quebrada de Humahuaca region of Jujuy, the winery and vineyards are nestled in a high-altitude desert bordering Bolivia and Chile’s Atacama Desert, just 50 miles from the Tropic of Capricorn.
The winery collaborates with local families in small villages who cultivate tiny parcels of historic Mission grape varieties, mainly Criolla Chica, Criolla Grande, and Moscatel. These grapes, which date back to the early 1900s, are cultivated at elevations of 6,500 to 8,000 feet along riverbeds. Most of the vines are trained as pergolas, known locally as parrals. With fewer than 10 hectares of Mission vines in all of Jujuy and many parcels under one hectare, production is minimal. Only a small amount of wine reaches the U.S. market.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is part of the ancient Camino Inca trade route, a historic path that has been used for over 10,000 years. The region is rich in history, with evidence of prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities. Several Purmamarca vineyards are located at the base of the famous Siete Colores rock formation, which displays a vibrant spectrum of colors from violet to green to purple, beautifully reflected on the winery's labels.
