Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini started their winery in 2019 alongside their son Manu Michelini. Their winery sits at the foot of the Andes in one of the highest elevations of Gualtallary where the soil contains some of the richest components of calcium carbonate and granite in all of South America. This particular sub region is at the highest, most western portion of Gualtallary and goes by the name La Cautiva.

At Michelini i Mufatto they strive to make some of the most unique wines of Argentina and the wines show tension, elegance and balance. They are currently working with Semillon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The trio also makes wine in Uruguay and Spain and as well as importing small production wine from Europe.

"Andrea Muffato and Gerardo Michelini are a prolific winemaking team. Using grapes from Tupungato, Uco Valley, they make wines that appeal more to the modern internationals tastes with good tension. Their best work so far is the Malbec La Cautiva, made with grapes from a vineyard in Gualtallary planted at 4,900 feet. In 2019, the pair also began bottling wines in Spain."

Reviews

  • Michelini i Mufatto 2021 Malbec, La Cautiva, Gualtallary
    Descorchados
    Rating: 97 (7/31/2024)

Michelini i Mufatto obtains 3 wines from its La Cautiva Vineyard. Óleo and La Cuni are selections from certain blocks, while this La Cautiva is a sort of summary of that place in Gualtallary, an extreme vineyard above an altitude of 1,600 meters in a hidden corner of the Andes in the Uco Valley. Check out the flavors of this wine—a combination of tart red-fruit notes garnished with herbs and some flowers. The texture is firm and tense from the acidity, but also from the firm, sharp tannins. The delicious finish smells of flowers in a Malbec with a strong sense of place. A mountain red.

  • Michelini i Mufatto 2021 'Propositos' Chenin Blanc, Tunuyan
    Descorchados
    Rating: 94 (7/31/2024)

From very old vineyards planted in the 1970s in the Villa Seca sector of Tunuyán, this 100% Chenin Blanc was aged in foudres for about 15 months and offers outstandingly intense acidity that seems to have a special energy, like a spark that sends projectiles all over the palate. This is a wine for aging, that acidity is sending a message.Leave in the cellar for 5 years—more if you want. It will only get better with time.

  • Michelini i Mufatto 2021 'GY' Malbec/Cabernet Franc, Gualtallary
    Descorchados
    Rating: 94 (5/17/2023)

Take this GY as a kind of summary of Gualtallary through tow of the varieties that so far best interpret this mountainous area in the north of the Uco Valley. It's 60% Malbec and 40% Cabernet Franc from vineyards at different altitudes. Vinified with 30% stems, it's rich in fruity aromas and flavors, juicy tones of tart red and black fruits, herbal notes, and a firm tannin structure similar to the sensation of chalk on the palate.

  • Michelini i Mufatto 2020 'Convicciones' Chardonnay, Gualtallary
    Descorchados
    Rating: 95 (5/17/2023)

For Convicciones, Michelini i Mufatto selects grapes from a vineyard at about 1,600 meters above sea level, in the area known as La Cautiva, towards the western end of Gualtallary, in the Uco Valley. These are 11-year-old vineyards that the winery buys from a local producer to make this very special Chardonnay, with a long aging of 15 months with its lees in barrels, which has given it a sort of lactic aroma and an intense golden color. The palate is large, intense, with many fruit flavors combined with juicy acidity, highlighting the fruity character in this wine that needs at least a couple of years to gain complexity in the bottle.
