Native Spaniards Patrick Mata and Alberto Orte founded Olé Imports (now Olé & Obrigado) in 1999 while in college. Both Patrick and Alberto come from families who have been producing wine in Spain since the 1800s. In fact, the first wines they sold in the U.S. were from Alberto’s family in Montilla.

In 2003, Patrick and Alberto established another company that was directly involved in the production of Iberian wines: Vinos Atlántico. Together, they set out to discover new production areas, to discover unique and compelling vineyards, and to recover old vines and native varieties with the intention of producing handcrafted, terrior-driven wines to export to the United States. Wildly successful, the Vinos Atlántico’s portfolio now encompasses 18 different appellations across the Iberian Peninsula.

Alberto Orte Vinos is a division of Vinos Atlántico that highlights wines farmed and vinified by Alberto from beginning to end, thus warranting his talent and status as one of the great active vintners in Spain. Alberto is intent on rescuing nearly extinct grape varieties such as Tintilla and Vijiriega in the DO region of Cádiz in southwestern Andalucía, and elaborating wines of place. From Valdeorras to Rioja to Cadiz, Alberto is passionately producing extraordinary and iconic wines that hearken back to Spain’s incredible winemaking history. His taciturn demeanor belies an acute intellect and profound talent for extrapolating what he has learned from history and making it new again.

    The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 93 (2/28/2022)

"The characterful white 2019 Escalada do Sil Blanco reveals notes of pollen, beeswax, yeasts and yellow fruit and some spiciness. It's medium-bodied with 13.5% alcohol and a round and dry palate. It's a serious white Valdeorras going beyond the variety." - Luis Gutiérrez

    Rating: 93 (12/1/2016)

Sharp acidity and a fresh and flavorful finish that does also hint at vanilla undertones. Fresh, flavorful and balanced.

The pure Albariño 2020 Muti is a joint venture between Rodrigo Méndez and Alberto Orte from Ole Imports and sold exclusively to them. It comes from a vineyard called Eira da Juapa, from a grape grower in Meis (San Salvador). It has some ripeness and honeyed notes despite being low in alcohol (12.8%) and having very high acidity (over eight grams, with a pH of 3.07). It's not as vibrant as other 2020s; in fact, it feels closer in style to some 2019s... 1,200 bottles were filled after one year in two 5,000-liter barrels. It was bottled in August 2021.

(Editors' Choice) Inky ruby to the eye, this wine has a nose of brambly fruits of the wood with a hint of pine needle. Substantial tannins and bold acidity are equally matched, while flavors of black cherry, blackberry, mocha, marjoram and orange zest sail into an enduring finish.
