Terroir Notes: A Portela showcases the special terroir of Valdeorras in a rare way, as the region is known primarily for white wine production. Hailing from the A Portela subdistrict where red grapes can ripen on a rounded hilltop, this aromatic Mencía is a perfect introduction to the hallmark red grape of Galicia. Winemaker Alberto Orte produces A Portela from a single vineyard, planted to high elevation slate and granite soils. The vines were planted between 1976-1990.

Winemaking Notes: The wine cold soaks for five days in tank. Once fermentation completes, the skins spend another 10 days in tank, then racked. The wine ages for 12 months in stainless steel plus another eight months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: "Fragrant crushed-rose and lighter cherry aromas here with a very fluid, even and plush palate. Fine, yet powerful tannins. Dark stones and spices. Plenty of detail." - James Suckling

Pairing Suggestions: Herb-roasted chicken, pork loin, sautéed mushrooms, lamp chops or even salmon would be divine.

“Deep garnet in color, this wine has a bouquet of ripe summer cherry, raspberry and a hint of rose petal. Bright red fruits transfer to the palate, where they are met by velvety tannins and notes of slate, clove, aniseed and lavender that culminate in an enduring finish.”
