Terroir Notes: This pure Nerello Mascalese comes from a partly ungrafted vineyard Campo Re situated at the far western side in the valley floor at the entrance of Randazzo. The vineyard altitude is 735 meters asl and is characterized by deep sandy soil. This cru is profound, tannic, and Nebbiolo-ish compared to the other crus. The average vine age is 70+ years.

Winemaking Notes: All of Frank's red wines are produced the same way. Grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed before a 50-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks (2,500-7,000 liters or 1,500-2,500 liters for crus). Wines are not fined. They are filtered before bottling with cartridges of 5 micron. SO2 additions can vary from 15 to 50 mg/l (added or not) depending on the quality of grapes and stability of the wine.

Appellation Notes: Some of Frank's vineyards are too high in elevation for the Etna DOP, so he uses the Terre Siciliane IGP for the sake of uniformity.

2020 Vintage Report from Frank: " [Great] The real winter came only end of January but with good snow; the pruning was finished late as we had to do some corrective pruning in a new vineyard which took more time than planned. The rest of the season was relatively balanced and we slide into the harvest pretty smoothly with stress for some of the workers to get COVID and send the whole team in quarantine… it was very stressful to keep everybody safe and sound but we managed with lots of precautions. Harvest went pretty easy as the nice weather was continuing until late autumn. A nice compensation to the COVID stress! The reds have a nice balance and I like the structure of the wines as tannins are present and all fits nicely. Magma was picked in perfect zodiac and I was really happy. The Bianco Vigne Alte will be promising."
