No estate expresses the salt-kissed limestone-driven terroir of the idyllic Provençal seaside village of Cassis like Domaine du Bagnol, and the current generation Sébastien Genovesi crafts a rosé of scintillating energy, chiseled calcareous musculature, and gleaming red fruits. Bagnol’s Cassis Rosé is pressed directly and rapidly (in under two hours) to extract as little color as possible, and the bottled wine (certified organic) contains only 10 milligrams per liter of total sulfur—a factor which contributes to its gorgeous purity of texture and intense evocation of limestone.

Vintage Notes: In Provence, the 2023 growing season was generally more difficult the further inland one went, as summer’s heat wave was mitigated by the nearby Mediterranean Sea at Domaine du Bagnol. Harvest began nearly the same moment as in 2022 across the board in Provence, and high temperatures necessitated quick picking; Sébastien Genovesi at Bagnol employed more harvest than usual in 2023 and was forced to rent a third press in order to keep up. Happily, the 2023 rosés offer a breeziness and balance that is welcome for the category and increasingly rare in these times of intense climate change.

One of my absolute favorite rosés, Bagnol has developed a cultish following among those who've discovered it. Made in the tiny appellation of Cassis, named for the central village perched on the cliffs along Mediterranean coastline, it offers far more character and depth than most basic rosés out there. Think smoky, salty, savory energy coursing alongside alluring ripe fruit and earth. Current owners, father and son Jean-Louis and Sebastien Genovesi, have invested heavily in the ancient domaine, and the wines shine brighter year after year—and represent fantastic value.
