Vineyard Notes: Bechtold is a storied site planted by Joseph Spenker, which has somehow eluded Lodi’s industrialization. Could the reason be that Bechtold produces fruit of typicity, freshness and transparency, rather than the inky, heavy wines for which Lodi has become known? Kevin Phelps, the current steward of Bechtold thinks so. He says, “It’s a complete one-eighty from what is typically a California, especially Lodi style, which is big, dark, jammy fruit bombs.” (136, The New California Wine ). The vineyard was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes were primarily whole cluster fermented with punch downs in half ton bins. The wine aged in neutral French oak barrels for 8 months sur lie.
Tasting Notes: Big expressive nose of strawberry blow pop, dark cherry, tarragon, and bright raspberry. Background notes of cassis and citrus peel with a teeny, tiny hint of white pepper. Delicious medium-bodied mouthful of ripe plum and baker’s chocolate. Long lingering finish of red raspberry, white pepper, tobacco, and fine tannins.
Artwork by John Duckworth : "My favorite spot off River Road where I return regularly to climb down a bluff on the side of the road in my hip-waders and walk out into the marsh with my camera gear to document the changing color of the low country marsh."
