The Rancheríera de Don Carlos, or “Rancho Grande,” reaches as high as 1,500 meters. Forests run into plentiful fields of magueys until you reach Don Carlos’ viñata at 800 meters in El Platanar, a community nestled in the Las Quebradas region of the Municipality of Topia Durango. The terrior of the agave shines bright, but strength in Don Carlos’ character and the love of his family can be felt with each sip of his mezcal.
Agave: Chacaleño
Mezcalero: Don Carlos Ángulo Ríos
Roast: Cylindrical earthen pit; black oak & tepehuaje
Crushing Method: Mechanical
Fermentation: Wild, in ground adobe for 8 days, then 8 more with spring water
Still Style: Alembic copper, wood, and stainless steel (with bagasso)
Distillation: Double distilled
Tasting Notes: The Origen Raíz Chacaleño shows notes of milk chocolate, phyllo dough, and raspberry. The palate consists of various herbs, pine, and walnut flavors. The texture is brisk and friendly.
Label Note: According to Asis Cortés, the Consejo Regulador del Mezcal that certifies mezcal required the addition of Espadín to the title of this release, but this name is not used locally. Producers simply refer to this as maguey Chacaleño, and it varies a great deal from the Espadín grown in Oaxaca. Chacaleño is a rare type of Espadín endemic to Las Quebradas.
