Magoutes Winery is based in Siatista, in the remote mountains of western Macedonia, about as far from the postcard version of Greece as you can get. At 750–890 meters, this is a cold, dry, windy inland climate with no maritime influence, and rocky limestone and clay soils. Vines have been cultivated around Siatista since at least the 17th century, but decades of war, economic hardship and declining interest in grape growing reduced the vineyards to a handful of surviving old parcels by the 1970s.

Dimitris Diamantis comes from one of those old grape growing families. His grandfather hand-grafted the family’s century-old vineyard with Xinomavro and the local varieties Moschomavro and Nigrikiotiko. In the 1990s, Dimitris and his partner George Papageorgiou set out to revive what was left, preserving vine material from the remaining old vineyards and eventually replanting 18 hectares in the Magoutes area. Their first commercial wine, a Xinomavro–Moschomavro blend, was released in 2002.

Today, the winery farms organically and works on a genuinely small scale, with spontaneous fermentations and minimal cellar intervention. But the bigger project is the region itself. Dimitris and George are working to establish roughly 200 hectares around Siatista as a new PDO, potentially creating Greece’s fifth Xinomavro-based appellation—and one of its smallest. The wines are compelling because they come from a place that nearly lost its wine culture altogether, and from grapes that would probably have disappeared with it.
