Sohm & Kracher is the collaboration between New York sommelier Aldo Sohm and Austrian winemaker Gerhard Kracher. They started the project in 2009 with a simple idea: take Grüner Veltliner seriously, particularly from the underappreciated vineyards of the Weinviertel. Working with a small group of growers, they look for older vines, distinctive sites and naturally lower alcohol, aiming for wines with energy and structure rather than the broad, heavy style that can sometimes creep into Grüner. The lineup ranges from the bright, peppery Lion to Alte Reben and the more site driven Single Vineyard, with a separate bottling from the limestone soils of St. Georgen in Burgenland.

The fruit comes from roughly six hectares of hand harvested vineyards spread across the Weinviertel and St. Georgen. Soils range from loam, gravel and limestone in the Weinviertel to pure Muschelkalk in St. Georgen, giving the wines noticeably different textures and profiles. Fermentations are spontaneous and the wines are made at the Kracher family winery in Illmitz, with élevage ranging from stainless steel to large format and used oak. Everything is fermented dry. This is Grüner Veltliner with a sommelier’s eye on the details: fresh, restrained, mineral and built for the table, with the more serious bottlings capable of plenty of bottle age.
