The name “Les Foulards Rouges” (“the red scarves”) pays tribute to the French author Frédéric Fajardie who wrote the revolutionary saga Les Foulards Rouges.

Jean-François Nicq founded Les Foulards Rouges in 2001 after twelve years of winemaking in the Côtes du Rhône. With degrees in geology and oenology, and inspired by natural wine pioneers Thierry Puzelat and Marcel Lapierre, he purchased nine hectares in the Roussillon village of Montesquieu-les-Albères. Today, his estate encompasses 20 hectares, all AB certified organic, producing wines defined by freshness, balance, and drinkability.

The domaine’s vineyards lie in the French side of historical Catalogne, just six miles from the sea, three miles from the Spanish border, and the Pyrenees in close view. Jean-François farms a mosaic of plots. The lower, flatter vineyards contain decomposed sandier soils, which yield lighter, easier to drink cuvées. The hillside parcels are mostly head-trained bush vines planted directly into fractured bedrock; these produce denser, more structured wines. Soils are lightly worked with the help of Uma, Jean-François’s mule, while cover crops (legumes, rye, clover) and organic compost build humus-rich topsoil.

In the cellar, Nicq follows a simple, precise, and low-intervention approach, often employing carbonic maceration to enhance purity and energy. Each wine reflects its plot and vintage, always retaining remarkable freshness despite the region’s hot, dry climate and the persistent Tramontane wind.

The Roussillon is a notoriously difficult environment, yet Nicq has spent more than two decades coaxing vitality and nuance from his vines. His work combines thoughtful cépage selection, traditional bush-trained vines, canopy management, and the steady hand of experience. Today, Les Foulards Rouges is one of the most respected domaines in French natural wine—not only for the wines themselves but also for the spirit of generosity and community Jean-François embodies.
