Quinta do Estranxeiro 2021 'O Estranxeiro' Tinto, Ribeira Sacra DO Login WA 92 In Stock

From the winemaker at the helm of the ancient Bodegas Zárate in Rias Baixas comes a project of curiosity in nearby Ribeira Sacra.

Situated along the gorges of the Sil and Miño Rivers, Eulogio Pomares and Rebeca Montero, tend to two steep hillsides of 50+ year old vines. A vineyard in the Armandi, planted to granite and slate soils, sees southern exposure and warmer days compared to the domaine’s second site — Ribeiras del Miño, where the Atlantic cools the sub region's long hot summers. Fruit from both vineyards are vinified together. The result of which is a balanced yet energetic expression of the Ribeira Sacra.

As we've seen time and again with the albarinos of Bodegas Zarate, it's skilled and intentional hand both in the vines and cellar that make exciting wines. As Pomares continues to ascend, then so to do the wiens of Ribeira Sacra.

Mencia here is old, but maintains a leanness in the bottle. The result is a fresh and mineral driven red wine — with an even brighter future to boot.

The 2021 O Estranxeiro is a Mencía from the village of A Cova, different plots fermented in concrete, chestnut and oak and matured in those components for seven months. It has a medium-bodied palate and a moderate 12.5% alcohol and mellow acidity. It has a soft texture and a juicy mouthfeel, with clean and precise flavors, not terribly complex but very pleasant.
