Originally from Canada, Katie Worobeck developed an interest in wine and organic farming during her studies. After spending several years working among the vines in her native Ontario, she moved to France and secured a dream role working alongside the legendary Anne and Jean-François Ganevat in the southern Jura.
After five years with the Ganevats, Katie began tending a parcel of old vines planted on clay and limestone in the Sud Revermont’s renowned lieu-dit ‘Les Varrons’. Here, she cultivates Chardonnay, along with a few rows of Gamay and old hybrid varieties. She now manages an additional three hectares of old vines planted on limestone and marl in a picturesque setting surrounded by forest, high in the hills above Grusse, where all the classic Jurassic varieties are present.
Katie’s approach in the vineyard emphasizes working in harmony with nature. She farms organically, incorporating biodynamic principles with a strong focus on soil health. To promote biodiversity, she has begun planting trees and shrubs among the vines and plans to rotate livestock within her parcels in the future.
The wines are crafted in an old cave beneath her home, where Katie works with meticulous attention to detail to produce wines that capture the beauty and purity of each site. Pressing is done manually, élevage takes place in old barrels of various sizes, and all movements are conducted by gravity. The wines are bottled unfiltered and without any additions.
There is a lightness of touch which pervades Katie’s work, resulting in wines which even in the context of the Jura are delicate, fragrant and hauntingly beautiful.
