Karine Mollenhauer and her husband Edgar Carter have a family winery in the Maule Valley of Chile where they produce small production wines from indigenous grapes. Their idea is to elevate the reputation of Chilean wine through their hard work farming organically with minimal intervention in the cellar. Everything is done by hand, with gravity (instead of pumps), free of synthetic chemicals, minimal intervention of the musts, and always unfiltered. They are making pure wine which expresses the beautiful terroir where they reside between the Pacific Coast and the Andes Mountains.

The varietal and clean 2020 Aurora de Itata Cinsault has notes of cola nut and bright red berry fruit that makes it perfumed, attractive and pleasant. The palate is marked by the grainy granite tannins and a dry finish. This is 13.5% alcohol, reflecting a warmer vintage. It transported me to the place and soils.

Pachagua is located north of the Itata River, about 26 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, but it is still a warm area, with granite soils on the slopes of the valley. Here there is a delicious, fresh red fruit (perhaps because it only gets direct sun in the morning), which is shown very clearly on the nose and also in the mouth, where there are also earthy details that give it complexity and relate it to the variety. The tannins are firm and adorably rustic. One for sausages.

Carter Mollenhauer buys the grapes for this Aurora from a vineyard planted more than 70 years ago by José Vera in the Guarilihue Alto area, in the Itata Valley. It was aged for 8 months in concrete containers with very little movement of the wine to gently extract the aromas and flavors. The wine has an earthy character that stands between the red fruit flavors that are classic of the variety. It is very soft, but at the same time with an acidic energy that acts as a structure. One to drink by the liter.
