The dependable Boutinot Wines has partnered with Los Monteros winery in Utiel-Requena, Spain to again bring standout, small production sparkling wine to the market. Located just west of Valencia on Spain’s eastern coast, Utiel-Requena has a long and rich winemaking history. The undulating hills of the region reap the benefits of the nearby Mediterranean, with cold winters, hot summers, and warm westerly winds that make for ideal grape growing. The first records of viticulture in the region date back to the early Iberians in 7th century BC, whose methods were later advanced during the rule of the Romans. As phylloxera and mildew outbreaks ran rampant in France during the 19th century, Utiel-Requena’s vineyards prevailed, launching their wines into global attention.
Today, grape growing remains a predominant economic force in Utiel-Requena, and the region has seen a renaissance of wine traditions among many winemakers. Included in this group is Los Monteros, where traditional Cava is made with carefully selected Macabeo grapes from the vineyards of Requena. Winemaker Juan José Muñoz stores his wines in rima (placed on their sides in rows to age) for at least nine months before bottling. The resulting fresh and fruity Cavas are an exceptional embodiment of Utiel-Requena's excellent terroir and prestigious winemaking heritage.
