Gordo 2015 (Monastrell / Cabernet), Yecla DO Login AG 91 WA 90 In Stock

For almost four generations Patrick Mata's family produced wine in Malaga, Montilla, Sanlucar, Rioja and other Spanish regions. These wines were sold in many countries including the U.S. before and after prohibition. During the 60's the demand of Malaga wines suffered greatly, which ultimately resulted in the Mata winery closing its doors in 1972. Gordo pays tribute to the Mata winemaking heritage and specifically to Patrick's father. The Gordo label is a replica of one of the family labels from the late 1800's.

Today, Patrick and Alberto, through Compania de Vinos del Atlantico (CVA), are resurrecting their family heritage and producing wines in many regions throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

  • Gordo 2015 (Monastrell / Cabernet), Yecla DO
    Rating: 91 (4/25/2019)

Displays vibrant, mineral-accented cherry and dark berry scents that are complicated by suggestions of candied flowers, licorice and exotic spices. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and blackberry flavors that deepen slowly on the back half. Smooth, even tannins frame a very long, penetrating finish that leaves a hint of succulent herbs behind.

    The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 90 (4/30/2019)

The wine has notes of thyme and rosemary, classical tree bark notes and a touch of herbal freshness within the ripe character of the year. The palate is juicy and approachable, with round tannins and very good balance. A Mediterranean red of high drinkability, clean and harmonious.
