Château de l’Éperonnière is nestled in the heart of the Coteaux du Layon, a prestigious wine region in the Loire Valley designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoying a Coteaux du Layon wine means savoring a product born from a culturally rich and protected landscape.
A few years ago, the Tijou family, longtime proprietors of Château Soucherie in Beaufort-sur-Layon, decided to sell their larger estate and focus on a more intimate property nearby: Château de l’Éperonnière. This smaller estate also has deep roots in the family, having been owned by Mathieu Tijou’s uncle and originally purchased in 1900 by Mathieu’s great-grandfather.
Mathieu Tijou, son of Pierre-Yves and Brigitte, established his own domaine at Château de l’Éperonnière, debuting as an independent vigneron with the 2007 vintage. Immersed in viticulture from a young age, Mathieu pursued oenology studies in Nantes and Bordeaux, building a strong foundation for his craft.
Together with his wife, Charlotte, Mathieu has meticulously restored the historic property, preserving its traditional architecture while adding modern touches. Notably, they employed skilled artisans to restore a 13th-century wooden ceiling in the wine cellar. Beyond winemaking, the couple has expanded the estate into a destination for "oenotourism," offering event spaces and accommodations. They host weddings, seminars, family reunions, and other gatherings, blending hospitality with the estate’s charm.
The vineyards of Château de l’Éperonnière span both sides of the Loire River. Mathieu cultivates the Croix Picot Vineyard in the Savennières appellation, while the remaining vineyards around the château produce wines under the Anjou and Coteaux du Layon appellations.
