Vintage Notes: Vintage 2022 saw a few devastating heat waves. We’re lucky to be working some very old, very established dry famed parcels here. Although they’re not entirely impervious to such events, they are much better equipped than younger and/or irrigated sites. These heat waves set us back, timing wise, causing us to pick quite a bit later than usual. That said, what we got was of incredible quality. Maria Testa Martinson and her family have been farming these plots for over 100 years and the intuitive farming knowledge, love and attention shows in every single cluster. This is a co-ferment every year of our favorite parcels on the property. Carignan is earth, black tea and huckleberry spice (and acid!) while the Grenache and Charbono play supporting roles of candied strawberry and floral, plummy fruit.
Vineyard Notes: The Testa Vineyard is owned by Maria Testa-Martinson. The Carignan is 75 years old, the Grenache is 110 years old and the Charbono is 5 years old. The soils are sandy, fine, pebbly loam. This is benchland above the Russian River at 700 ft above sea level. All varieties are head-trained, bush vines.
Winemaking Notes: All varieties are picked at the same time and evenly distributed in stainless open top fermentors. Native whole cluster fermentation with no fermentation aids of any sort. 12 day fermentation. Full native malolactic conversion. Spends 10 months on lees in Flextank and old barrel, one racking takes place prior to bottling.
