First conceived as Barbeito’s core offerings in the 5-year-old category, the Island Dry and Island Rich Madeira wines have slowly evolved into something even more special. While other producers make their 5-year-old wines by the estufa method (avoiding the expense of barrel aging), Ricardo ages his Island Madeiras by the same costly canteiro method employed for his vintage wines. He even includes a small percentage of Sercial grapes in Island Dry. As a result, the Island Madeiras offer extraordinary character at a miraculously affordable price.

Vinification: Tinta Negra grapes come from various vineyards located in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and São Vicente. The Sercial grapes come from Jardim da Serra. The grapes ferment in stainless steel to the desired sweetness before being fortified with wine-derived neutral spirits. Aged for 5+ years in old French casks in a warehouse with stable year-round temperatures.

Tasting Notes: Hints of dried fruit, pistachio, citric and fine herbs. Clean and persistent, long fresh finish. Excellent as an aperitif, with olives, tapas and cheese.
