About the winemaker: Jean-Pierre Robinot’s journey into wine began at 22, sparked by a bottle of 1964 Cheval Blanc. His passion quickly deepened, and a chance meeting with natural wine pioneers Jules Chauvet and Marcel Lapierre in the late 1980s set him on a path of true discovery. He soon opened L’Ange Vin, one of Paris’ first natural wine bars, and co-founded the influential wine magazine Le Rouge et Blanc, which remains a cornerstone of natural wine writing in France.
By 2001, Robinot decided that to fully understand natural wine, he had to make it himself. He returned to his home village of Chahaignes in the Loire and began producing wine in the small windows of time between running his Paris bar—his first cuvée, playfully named TGV, nods to the high-speed train that connected his two worlds. Eventually, he moved to the countryside full-time, planting Pineau d’Aunis, Chenin Blanc, and Gamay, and transforming caves carved into the hills into his iconic barrel-filled cellars.
Robinot’s wines are made with no sulfur or additives, often fermenting slowly for years in old barrels. His work may appear chaotic, but it’s a deeply intuitive, meticulous process. Each label—often featuring artwork by him or his daughter—reflects the wine’s unique evolution. Today, he produces two lines: Domaine de l’Ange Vin, from his own vines, and L’Opera du Vin, from trusted local growers. Few winemakers are as patient or as poetic. Robinot simply lets the wine take its time—and it shows.
