Nebbiolo is the foundation for Le Pianelle's flagship red wine. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, with each grape variety and vineyard being processed individually. Maceration and fermentation occurs in open Grenier oak vats. The wine matures for 18 months in a combination of used barrels of 20 hL and 27 hL (large Stockinger) size. The Bramaterra ages in bottle for an additional 24 months before being released to the market.
The Bramaterra wine region is known for producing dry red wines, primarily from the Nebbiolo grape variety, locally referred to as Spanna, blended with other authorized varieties like Croatina (up to 30%) and Uva Rara or Vespolina (up to 20% each). Situated between Lessona to the west and partially bordered by Gattinara to the east, Bramaterra encompasses seven townships, with hillside vineyards at elevations ranging from 885 to 1,475 feet. The towering Monte Rosa shields the region from cold Alpine winds, while the altitude creates pronounced diurnal temperature variations.
Bramaterra’s distinctive red volcanic porphyry and quartz-rich soils contribute to its wines' intense minerality, vibrant acidity, and almost saline tension, along with a unique iron-like flavor. Bramaterra reds are celebrated for their aging potential.
