Vineyard Notes: The Gamay grapes come from 60-year-old vines planted in the Croix de Chèvre plot of the Grand Cras lieu-dit. Antoine Sunier works with 1.22 hectares. The vineyard is certified organic and has been farmed organically since 2003.

Winemaking Notes: Wine is transferred to tanks by gravity. Only indigenous yeast are used. Whole cluster carbonic maceration takes place for 8-15 days, followed by horizontal pressing and manual racking. The Gamay ages on its lees for 7 months in 70% neutral Burgundy barrels (8 years and older) and 30% cement epoxy tanks. The wine is not fined or filtered.

About Morgon: Morgon ranks just behind Moulin-à-Vent in terms of body and structure, offering a fuller, more serious style of Beaujolais. Although granite soil—Gamay’s preferred terrain—can be found across all of Beaujolais, Morgon is particularly granite-rich, resulting in concentrated and relatively tannic wines. These wines only improve with age, developing depth and complexity over time.

    Rating: 92 (4/23/2024)

The 2022 Morgon comes from 70- to 100-year-old vines on alluvial soils, farmed organically for 20 years. It underwent a 20-day maceration with just one pigeage before de-vatting. This has a very mineral-driven/slate-tinged bouquet that, thankfully, has sufficient fruit to t back it up. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, just a very subtle marmalade note complementing the red fruit and gentle grip on the finish. Excellent."
