Considered by many to be the greatest terroir for red wine in the entire appellation, Clos Saint-Jean sits high up on the slope overlooking the village itself. Jean-Marc Pillot owns just under half a hectare of staggeringly old Pinot Noir planted in 1910 in a parcel of 0.45 hectare size, producing what is unquestionably his grandest red from this site. There is a great sense of depth here and a layered character to the fruit which makes it feel at once nuanced and intense.
Vintage Notes: The 2019 growing season front-loaded its challenges—oidium, frost, and an uneven flowering—then skid-shifted into beautiful and warm summer, with late-summer breezes concentrating both sugar and acidity and leading to wines of excellent tension despite their heft. Unfortunately, Jean-Marc’s yields were down 50% from a normal vintage due to the early-season tribulations, but his finished 2019s offer a slightly brighter personality and a surer sense of equilibrium than the similarly rich 2018s. Harvest took place between the 11th and 17th of September, and the finished wines all clock in between 13.5% and 14% alcohol.
