Vintage Notes: 2021 was a year marked by the heavy rains of September, during the harvest season. Wines from 2021 managed to have a long and complete phenolic maturation, with an alcoholic degree lower than usual. 2021 was the fourth year of cultivation for Antonio using biodynamic methods.
Vineyard Notes: Liberdade 2021 is a white wine that comes from biodynamically farmed 30-year-old vines in the Dão foothills of Serra da Estrela. This blend is composed of 3 autochthonous grape varieties: Cerceal, Encruzado, and Bical. The vineyard is planted at 500 meters above sea level in granite soil.
Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeast. The wine ages in stainless steel and used French 600-liter barrels for 11 months, followed by 3 months blended in stainless to settle. Malolactic fermentation occurs. Antonio Madeira lets all his wines age through two winters. The coolness of the second winter allows the wine to settle and prevents the need for fining or filtration. A Liberdade is bottled without fining or filtration. No sulfites are added or any other compounds to the wine.
Tasting Notes: Pure fruit, flowers, fennel, gunpowder, fresh, tense, crystalline, electric mouth, potent and saline. Tasty, long and intense finish of wet granite. Suggested pairings include baked fish and poultry.
