Grape Source: This old vine Mencía is sourced from about 1.5 hectares planted on steep terraced slopes composed of granite and schist. The old vines are located around Chantada in the Lugo part of Ribeira Sacra. Xurxo Alba farms as naturally as possible. Grapes must be harvested by hand due to the steep slopes.
Vinification: The Mencía is destemmed and then spontaneously ferments for 10-30 days in stainless steel with indigenous yeast. The wine ages in stainless steel through the winter and is bottled unfined and unfiltered the following year; it does not see oak treatment of any kind.
About the Name: "Fusco" is a Galician word for night or darkness, ironic as this wine couldn't be lighter on it's feet, yet it was the first red wine Xurxo made after much success with Albariño. It is a light and fresh red wine with excellent drinkability.
