Winemakers' Notes: "In 2019 we took over the farming of a small plot of 60+ year-old vines in the heart of the St. Helena AVA of Napa. While the majority of the vineyard is Cabernet Sauvignon, there is also some Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot interplanted, which add layers of complexity to the wine. Distinctly Napa, but made with our restrained style, this wine really shows the true potential of Napa wines. Lots of nice, ripe fruit and smooth tannins with a lot of density without being heavy. High-end Napa without the makeup!" - Shaunt & Diego
Napa Valley 2019 Vintage Rated 97 points by Wine Spectator: "A wet spring resulted in less overt tannic structure, with small, concentrated berries delivering dense yet pure fruit flavors. Harvest stretched into October thanks to very moderate temperatures in August and September. Wines are ripe and lush yet well-defined; a worthy follow-up to the benchmark 2018 vintage."
Vineyard Notes: Katz Vineyard neighbors Cathy Corison’s famed Kronos Vineyard. The soils of the vineyard are Bale gravelly loam. These deep and well drained rocky soils are perfect for producing grapes of exceptional power and balance. Les Lunes leases, manages, and performs all aspects of farming at the vineyard. Everything is 100% organic. Neither synthetic herbicides nor insecticides are used and all sprays are timed in relation to the moon. The vineyard is watered minimally two or three times a year depending on vintage conditions. Composting and cover crops are used to increase the organic matter, life and vitality of the soils.
Winemaking Notes: Whole clusters were destemmed by hand and punched down once a day for the 14-day primary fermentation. Upon completion of alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wines were blended together and underwent a two year elevage in neutral Bordeaux barrels. 18ppm SO2 was added before the wine was bottled in July 2021. The wine aged for an additional 12 months in bottle before release.
