This pure Nerello Mascalese comes from ungrafted vines in contrada Zottorinoto, more specific in the section Chiusa Spagnola, situated lower in the valley floor. It is a bit hidden in an amphitheater surrounded by lava...very interesting parcel. Planted around 1925 at a lower altitude (620 meters asl), this unique vineyard produces a profound, tannic wine that is a bit Nebbiolo-ish compared to Frank’s other crus. The average vine age is 90+ years.
Winemaking Notes: All of Frank's red wines are produced the same way. Grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed before a 50-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks (2,500-7,000 liters or 1,500-2,500 liters for crus). Wines are not fined. They are filtered before bottling with cartridges of 5 micron. So2 additions can vary from 15 to 50 mg/l. (added or not) depending on the quality of grapes and stability of the wine.
Appellation Notes: Some of Frank's vineyards are too high in elevation for the Etna DOP, so he uses the Terre Siciliane IGT for the sake of uniformity.
